Osteoporosis
Today, we turn our attention to an often forgotten, sometimes neglected, yet truly vital organ of the body. It is so essential to our humanity that without it, we would quite literally resemble jellyfish. Yes, we are talking about the skeleton.
Although it may not seem as active as the heart, brain or liver, the skeleton is in fact a dynamic, living organ. Bone is made up of four main components: osteocytes (the long-suffering bone cells), osteoclasts (the natural scavengers that break down old bone), and osteoblasts (the builders responsible for forming new bone). All of these cells live and function within a mineral-rich framework.
Our skeleton is far more than a simple frame or “clothes hanger.” It is also a factory for blood cell production, a warehouse for essential minerals, and a bodyguard protecting delicate organs such as the brain. Good bone health is therefore closely linked to overall health.
Bone strength reaches its peak between the ages of 25 and 30. From that point onward, our goal is to preserve as much of that strength as possible. Bone failure is called a fracture. Even strong, healthy bone can fracture under extreme circumstances, but as we age, particularly if we have not been mindful of bone health in our younger years, fractures may occur with minimal trauma.
When fractures occur easily or spontaneously, the condition is called osteoporosis. The word literally means “porous bone.” In healthy bone, there are small spaces known as remodelling units, where osteoclasts remove old bone and osteoblasts replace it at roughly the same rate. Osteoporosis develops when this balance is disrupted. This can be influenced by genetics, menopause, prolonged immobility, or other factors that stimulate bone breakdown or suppress bone formation.
The result is bone that becomes thinner, more fragile and structurally weaker.
Diagnosis may be suspected clinically or after a fracture. Plain X-rays and quantitative ultrasound can provide helpful information, but because osteoporosis affects the entire skeleton, a Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan is required before medication is started.
Medication and supplements can play a role, but awareness remains the foundation of prevention. Looking after your skeleton is a lifelong commitment.
Bone health is supported by:
- Good nutrition
- Regular weight-bearing or impact exercise
- Adequate sunlight exposure for vitamin D
- Fresh air and avoiding smoking
- Moderation with alcohol
Interestingly, calcium is found in many foods beyond dairy. Sesame seeds, for example, contain more calcium per 100 grams than a glass of milk. Green leafy vegetables and fresh farm produce are excellent sources. Eggs, butter, salmon and shiitake mushrooms provide vitamin D. A nourishing breakfast, a brisk walk in the sunshine, and consistent movement all contribute to stronger bones.
Your skeleton works quietly and faithfully every day. A little awareness and care go a long way toward keeping it strong for the years ahead.
